Tuesday was a day of significant changes in the Nigerian Senate, as the Senate leadership conducted a major reshuffle, including the removal of key Senate leaders.
The reshuffle came after the Senate's majority leader, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), was impeached during a Senate session.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, confirmed the reshuffle as part of efforts to restructure and enhance the efficiency of the Senate's operations.
In an interview with the BBC, the Senate spokesperson emphasized that such reshuffling of leadership positions within the Senate is a routine practice to improve the Senate's functioning.
He also noted that the impact of leadership changes is not significant and is primarily aimed at ensuring that Senate leaders remain proactive.
Before the reshuffle, all 109 Senators had equal status in the Senate, regardless of their positions or roles. The restructuring occurred just a few weeks after the Senate's 10th regular session began on June 13th.
