Governor Agbu Kefas assures Commitment to Senior Citizens' Welfare in Taraba State

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State says the enrollment of retired local government staff who were neglected for years is a testament to his administration's dedication to the welfare of senior citizens in the state.

The Governor made the assertion during the celebration of the International Day of Older Persons in Nigeria 2023, an event organized by the Ministry of Social Justice and Re-integration in collaboration with senior citizens in the state was held at Shield Hotel Jalingo.

The Governor who was represented by his Deputy Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, assured the older persons that his administration is tirelessly working to provide them with good healthcare, housing, and other essential amenities. 

He also mentioned that plans are underway to settle the gratuities of both state and local government staff.

The Governor called on individuals and the public to collaborate in supporting senior citizens to ensure they have a sense of belonging.

Earlier, Filister Iranian Musa, the Commissioner of the Ministry for Social Justice and Re-Integration stated that the celebration was in compliance with the United Nations General Assembly resolutions from December 1990, mandating all member states to observe  International Day for Older Persons every year.

Speaking on this year's theme "Fulfilling the Promises of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights for Older Persons Across Generations." She explained that the celebration provided an opportunity to promote respect for the dignity and inclusion of older persons in society.

Emem Omokaro, the Director General of the National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC) in Abuja, dedicated October 5th to celebrate older persons in Nigeria as part of efforts to honor them. 

The DG called on the government, civil society organizations, individuals, and the public to embrace senior citizens and alleviate their hardships, bringing smiles to their faces.
