By Thomas Samuel

In a powerful display of commitment to combat climate change, the Moving Forward Team of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change in Taraba State organized a "Climate Change Awareness March."

The event aimed not only to address the alarming effects of climate change but also to encourage collective responsibility in planting more trees and engaging in activities that safeguard the environment.

His Excellency Dr. Agbu Kefas, who was represented by Deputy Governor Alh. Aminu Alkali reaffirmed the state's dedication to this crucial cause.

He expressed the government's unwavering commitment to providing a safer and more comfortable environment for all Tarabans.

Climate change presents a significant threat to food security in Nigeria, impacting both subsistence and commercial agriculture. The increase in diseases and pests, driven by climate change, poses a severe threat to agricultural production.

Furthermore, diminishing rainfall in northern Nigeria, especially in Taraba State, contributes to the alarming spread of desertification.

The event garnered support from various dignitaries, including Commissioner of Agriculture & Food Security Hon. Prof. Nicholas Oliver Namessan, several Commissioners, Members of the State House of Assembly, top government officials, and security agents. The Taraba State Government initiated this movement to address the urgent climate crisis.

Tarabans received a strong message to protect their environment from deforestation to mitigate the dangers of climate change.

Governor Agbu Kefas, speaking through Deputy Governor Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, emphasized that climate change is often caused by indiscriminate tree felling.
Taraba State, known for its agrarian nature, is grappling with adverse conditions caused by climate change.

The program primarily aims to educate Tarabans, especially traditional rulers, about the perils of climate change. The governor noted that the influx of immigrants to the state has contributed to the climate change issue. This has led to the ban on illegal mining and indiscriminate tree felling.

Commissioner of Environment A'isha Abubakar Barde emphasized the importance of their mission to sensitize the public about climate change dangers.

Brigadier General Aliyu Faransa, Retired, Chairman of the Task Force on Illegal Mining and Deforestation, applauded Governor Kefas's efforts in fighting deforestation and pledged to work relentlessly to combat illegal activities in the state.

The "Climate Change Awareness March" in Taraba showcases the determination of the government and the public to combat climate change, safeguard the environment, and ensure a sustainable future for all Tarabans.
