The Taraba State Independent Electoral Commission (TSIEC) held its inaugural interactive session with people living with disabilities (PWD) in preparation for the upcoming local government council elections scheduled for November 18, 2023.
This significant session occurred at the Blind Workshop Training Center in Anguwan Baraya, Jalingo, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023. Present at the event were Dr. Phillip Danladi Duwe, the Executive Chairman of TSIEC, commissioners from various zones in Taraba State, the Director of Finance, and the legal practitioner of TSIEC.
Dr. Duwe explained that the commission had previously engaged with political parties, organizations, and security operatives, and decided to include people with disabilities in this dialogue. He emphasized that PWDs make up over 15% of the population and have the right to vote, which should not be denied to them. Dr. Duwe assured that the commission has made adequate preparations to include them in the electoral process.
In response to Dr. Duwe's statement, Alhaji Sadiq Mohammed, Chairman of the People Living with Disability (PWD) group, expressed appreciation for TSIEC's initiative. He confirmed that this session was indeed a historic first in the state, highlighting the government's commitment to inclusivity. Alhaji Mohammed also pointed out the challenges faced by PWDs, such as the need for sound gadgets, and interpreters, and addressing security concerns.
The meeting concluded with an engaging question-and-answer segment, where PWDs interacted with the TSIEC commission. Dr. Duwe promised to establish necessary measures to ensure that they can exercise their right to vote effectively.
