Medical Doctors in Taraba decry poor welfare

The need for medical doctors to be mindful of their health while discharging their responsibilities has again been stressed.

The Taraba state Chairman Nigeria Medical Association Doctor Bako Istifanus made the call in a press briefing as part of activities to mark this year's physician week in the state.

He said globally around sixty-four percent of physicians work overtime and is even worse in Taraba as one doctor attends to an average of seventeen thousand persons instead of the World Health Organization's requirement of one doctor to six hundred persons.

He said it was important for the government and health workers to tackle the imbalance head-on alongside providing a welfare package for health workers.

The body decried the depreciating number of doctors, increase in quackery, and proliferation of clinics without resources to set standards, the challenge it said is causing more harm than good.

Doctor Bako encouraged physicians in the State to utilize the available tertiary health facilities to improve their skills.

The NMA commended Governor Agbu Kefas for handing over General Hospital Wukari to the federal university, declaring free education in the state, taking proactive steps to fight medical quackery, and having the tuition fee of Taraba State University slashed.

He said the gestures were laudable and appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas to consider the welfare of doctors in Taraba.
