Floods wreak havoc in riverine areas, affecting multiple communities and necessitating relocation and assistance.
As heavy rains continue to pound, communities in Karim Lamido Local Government Area (LGA), including Jen, Kwatalanga, Bandawa, and Madaka Kifi, are grappling with the devastating effects of flooding.
Local authorities and community leaders are urging residents in riverine areas to relocate to higher ground to avoid further destruction.
In an interview with our reporter in Jalingo, Aminu Ibrahim, one of the village heads, highlighted the critical role of the enlightenment committee constituted by the State Ministry of Special Duties and Social Services.
He stressed that Suleiman Nicholas, the committee's chairman, has been advising residents on the impending dangers of flood disasters.
Additionally, Aminu Ibrahim emphasized the importance of safety measures for boat operators along the River Band.
He urged them to avoid night movement and overloading of their boats, citing overloading as a leading factor contributing to accidents.
Dimka Lawan, another community leader, expressed his concerns regarding this year's flooding, which has arrived earlier than expected.
The flooding has affected communities across the region, causing significant damage to farms, houses, and property.
Aminu Ibrahim appealed to Governor Agbu Kefas for immediate assistance, as the floods have led to the destruction of valuable farm produce and inflicted damage on homes and belongings.
In a separate incident, heavy rainfall on Friday led to the submerging of houses and damage to properties worth millions of naira in Mayo Salbe village, Gashaka LGA of Taraba State.
The intense six-hour downpour resulted in the loss of personal belongings, domestic animals, and farm produce, adding to the distress of the affected residents.
Kum Thomas Shu’aibu, a third-class chief (KUM) in Mayo Salbe, expressed deep concern about the disaster. He called on both the Taraba State and Federal Governments to assist the victims in rebuilding their lives and homes. This event marked the first time the area experienced such a natural disaster, which also led to the collapse of a bridge within the region.
As communities in both Karim Lamido and Gashaka LGAs grapple with the aftermath of these devastating floods, urgent aid and support are required to help them recover and rebuild their lives. The local and state authorities are working to provide assistance and relief to those affected by the calamity.
